Haridwar is an ancient city and important Hindu pilgrimage site in North India's Uttarakhand state, where the River Ganges exits the Himalayan foothills. The largest of several sacred ghats (bathing steps), Har Ki Pauri hosts a nightly Ganga Aarti (river-worshipping ceremony) in which tiny flickering lamps are floated off the steps. Worshipers fill the city during major festivals including the annual Kanwar Mela.

Har-Ki-Pauri is the sacred Ghat was constructed by King Vikramaditya in memory of his brother Bhartrihari. It is believed that Bhartihari eventually came to Haridwar to meditate by the banks of the holy Ganga. When he died, his brother constructed the Ghat in his name which later came to be known as Har-Ki-Pauri. This sacred bathing ghat is also known as Brahmakund. The reflection of golden hues of floral diyas in the river Ganga is the most enchanting sight in the twilight throughout the Ganga Arti Ceremony. It is the main ghat on the river Ganga, where a holy dip is a must for every devotee.
On the north-side of the canal, between Har Ki Pauri and the Upper Road, is multi-colored Bara Bazaar. Along with the spiritual paraphernalia or prasaad (foodstuff offered to the gods, photos of the deities, religious pamphlets etc) are scores of tiny stalls crammed along both sides of bazaar selling an variety of goods including shawls, brassware, glass bangles, wooden whistles, bamboo canes and can baskets.
Sited in Sapt Sarovar near ashram at Haridwar, Bharat Mata Temple is a holy place of its own kind. Bharat Mata Mandir was founded by Swami Satyamitranand Giri. On 15th May 1983, the temple was instated by Late Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi. The temple is also unique in the sense that it is built in 8 stories, each of which represents a specific theme and is devoted to various legends and deities of India. The eight-storey temple rises up to a height of 180 ft.
Walking 3 MILES south of Haridwar takes you to the historical town of Kankhal. The place is strewn all over with ashrams and religious centres. Here you can look for various pooja items including wonderfully carved images of Hindu dieties and the very popular sandalwood rudraksh. Devotees, sages and sadhus find it mandatory to wear rudraks for its beneficial properties. As per the Hindu mythology, seeds of rudraksh are the tears of Lord Shiva. As the rudraksha seeds touches the heart, they send out energy. Wearing rudraksh can do wonders for you, if you follow the rules.
