Formerly The Hunting Reserve Of The Nawabs Of Junagadh, Gir Forest Is The Largest Compact Tract Of Dry Deciduous Forest In Gujarat And The Only Abode Of The Asiatic Lion In The World. Protection Was First Given In 1900, When Lion Numbers Were Down To A Mere 12 Individuals! By 1936, The Number Had Increased To 250 Animals And Today There Are A Little Over 300 Individuals. Gir Was Declared A Wildlife Sanctuary In 1965 And Given National Park Status Ten Years Later. Besides The Asiatic Lion, Gir Supports A Large Population Of Leopard, And Other Carnivores Include Jungle Cat, Jackal, Striped Hyena, And Common And Ruddy Mongoose. The Herbivores Include Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Chowsingha, Chinkara And Wild Boar. Over 300 Bird Species Have Been Recorded Here. These Include The Shaheen Falcon, Bonelli's Eagle, Great Horned Owl, Tawny Eagle And Black Winged Kite. Grey And Jungle Bush Quail, Grey Partridge, Nightjar, Black-headed Cuckoo Shrike, Gray Drongo, Pied Woodpecker, Black Ibis, And White-necked Stork Are Also Found At Gir.

Birds Like The Paradise Flycatcher, Pied Woodpecker And Back-headed Cuckoo, Various Species Of Eagles, Painted Sand Grouse, Flamingo, Partridge, Bush Quail, Parrot, And Peacock Can Be Spotted Here. There Is Also A Small Temple Dedicated To Lord Krishna Near The Tulsi Shyam Springs.

    The Mahabat Maqbara Is A Grand Mausoleum Of Nawab, Built In 1892 In An Indo-islamic Architectural Style. This Mausoleum Has Been Testified As The Best Structure Made In This Architectural Style Amongst Other Such Structures In India. The Doors And Minarets Of This Mausoleum Are Made Out Of Silver And Surrounded By Spiralling Stairways.

    The Kamleshwar Dam Is Situated Within The Sasan-gir National Park, In Its Very Centre. This Dam Is Built Over One Of The Seven Rivers That Drain In The Area Of Gir Sanctuary. These Rivers Include Shingoda, Raval, Godavari, Macchundri, Hiran, Datardi And Saraswati. Kamleshwar Dam Is Built Over Hiran River. It Is Also Referred To As The Life Line Of Gir. It Is The Breeding Site Of Marsh Crocodiles Of Gir Along With Being The Halt Point Of Many Species Of Birds.

    The Girnar Mountain Is Situated At 4 Km East Of Junagadh District. It Is 1100 M High And Its Main Attractions Comprise Of The Jain Temples Situated On Its Hilltop. These Jain Temples Were Built Between The Years Of 1128 And 1500. It Is Also Said To Be The Place Where Neminath Who Was The 22nd Jain Tirthankara, Died After Living Here For 700 Years. To Honour Him A Marble Temple Has Been Built In Here Namely Mallinath Temple. This Temple Comprises A Black Marble Statue Of Neminath. Several Rare Species Of Gir Lions Are Also Seen Here. There Are Over 8,500 Steps To Climbfor Reaching This Mountain Top.
