Australia at a Glance

The Australian continent is a unique land, full of contrasts. It is the earth's biggest island and the sixth-biggest country in the world in land area. Australia is the only nation to govern an entire continent. It is about the size of mainland United States and one and a half times the size of Europe. Australia’s vibrant cities have their unique attractions and experiences. Australia has 10 per cent of the world's biodiversity. A great number of its native plants, animals and birds exist nowhere else in the world. It is one of the world's most multicultural countries, a nation rich in indigenous and immigrant cultures. From tropical rainforests to the deserts, a snowfield to the Antarctic Territory, Australia has it all. It has many internationally recognised World Heritage sites, including the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park and the Sydney Opera House.

This diversity creates a cultural environment in Australia that is lively, energised, innovative and outward looking. Australia's first inhabitants, the aboriginal people, are believed to have migrated from some unknown point in Asia to Australia around 50,000 to 60,000 years ago.
