Maldives, officially known as the Republic of the Maldives and also referred to as the Maldives Islands, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean – Arabian Sea. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls in the north of equator on Indian Ocean. The islands sit in the sea and the land area is completely disconnected from other countries. Maldives is one of the many countries located on the equator which divides North Pole and South Pole. The country is stretched narrowly from north to south of the globe and equator crosses between Fuvahmulah and Gaafu Dhaalu atoll in the southern parts of the nation. The Maldives is made of a coral reef encircling a lagoon, with deep channels dividing the reef ring. It is the perfect place to sit on a beach and watch a sunset with a cocktail on your hand.

    The early settlers probably came before 500 B.C., from Sri Lanka and southern India. Originally, Maldivians were Buddhists, but in the twelfth century Islam was proclaimed as the national religion. The population consists of a mix of people who trace their descent from Sri Lanka, India, Arab countries, and Africa. Because of religious and linguistic homogeneity, there is stability and unity. Maldives has more of an ancient history than one might suppose, with the original settlers linked to the Indus Valley Civilisations.

    Maldivian cuisine is a spicy blend of Arabic, Indian, Sri Lankan and Oriental flavours with fish, mainly tuna, being a favourite dish. Rice and fish are the staple foods. Betel leaf with areca nut, cloves, and lime, known as foh, is chewed after meals. Many of the flavours are derived from Kerala and Sri Lanka and are often very spicy and hot.

    Mashuni is a typical Maldivian breakfast, composed of tuna, onion, coconut, and chilli. This dish is usually eaten with freshly-baked roshi, flatbread and sweetened hot tea. The aroma and the rich flavour bursts within a mouthful.

    Every single Maldivian enjoys this dish. It is easy to prepare and simply delicious. This dish can be eaten for breakfast with roshi or chapatti, or for dinner with rice. The dish is mostly prepared with Tuna fish.

    It is one of the basic and traditional food items of Maldivian cuisine. Raw tuna is used to prepare ‘garudhiya’. This dish is highly valued and eaten by Maldivians almost every day.
    It is served hot with rice, lime and chilli. The soup can also be enjoyed as it is with a little lime juice and chopped chilli added to it.

Since Maldives is the homeland of Sunni Muslims and Islam is the main religion followed here, so it's very much obvious that Maldivians celebrates almost all the festivities of Muslims, apart from the ones like National day, Independence Day and Republic day that are specific to their country.

    The Muslim festivals of Eid can be said to be the Islamic equivalent of Christmas. They are the most important religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide. During this special occasion, offerings are made to the poor and needy. People in Maldives dress in their best clothing for the Eid celebrations. They embrace each other and wish 'Eid Mubarak'.

    Independence Day celebrations in Maldives take place on a large scale on 26th of July. The main highlights of the Independence Day of Maldives consist of the parades by the National Security Services and the National Cadet Corps. These events are interceded by the passing of floats and processions depicting traditional and modern themes.

    It is an important day, as it is observed to celebrate the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam over the Portuguese occupation in the year 1573. Official speeches, flag hoisting and military events mark this day. The national day is celebrated on the third month of Islamic calendar.
