Gallipoli at a Glance

The Gallipoli Peninsula is the site of extensive First World War battlefields and memorials on the north bank of the Dardanelles Strait. The peninsula runs in a south-westerly direction into the Aegean Sea, between the Hellespont and the bay of Melas. It is a commemorative site for the Allied and Turkish forces who fought, died and were wounded there. The Peninsula has recently become a popular tourist destination due to the unique environmental, archaeological and geological features. The area climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and warm, rainy winters. There are sunken ships, trenches, castles, towers and hundreds of remains of the war. In total, there are graves and memorials of around 250,000 Turkish soldiers, and 250,000 from Australia, New Zealand, England and France. Thousands of people visit the war cemeteries every year, and it is one of the most famous sites in Turkey.

The Gallipoli Peninsula is now a national park, with moving memorials to those who died here almost a century ago. There are three main battlefield areas - Cape Helles, Anzac / Lone Pine and Suvla Bay. You can visit the sites of The Nek, Johnston’s Jolly, ANZAC Cove and Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair. As you travel, hear hard-hitting facts from your guide about the failed Allied land campaign that began in April 1915 with landings of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The site bears the names of nearly 5,000 soldiers who have no known grave.
