Edinburgh is easy to reach by train. Trains from London to Edinburgh take less than 5 hours. Edinburgh has great rail links to other major cities too. York, Newcastle, Inverness and Aberdeen are all about 2 hours away while Glasgow is just 50 minutes away on the First ScotRail service which leaves Waverley train station every 15 minutes.

As the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh enjoys easy access to the Scottish motorway network. So it is quick and easy to get here by car. If you are travelling from the north of Scotland, Edinburgh is only 3 hours from Inverness and just over 2 hours from Aberdeen. Journey times from England are just as good. You can get here from Birmingham in about 5.5 hours, from Manchester and York in about 4 hours, and the city is just 2.5 hours from Newcastle.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. The castle houses the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat

Holyrood Park is a short walk from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in the heart of the city. It is a 640 acre Royal Park adjacent to Holyrood Palace. The parks highest point is Arthurs Seat, a dormant volcano, and sits 251m above sea level giving excellent view of the city. It is also the site of a large and well preserved fort. This is one of four hill forts dating from around 2000 years ago. With its diverse range of flora and geology it is also site of Special Scientific Interest.

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, formerly known as the Outlook Tower, is a building next to Edinburgh Castle. This Aladdin's cave is filled with illusions, tricks, puzzles, hands-on experiences and unbelievable effects to experience and interact with. You can get involved, play and touch everything. Step in to the Vortex Tunnel and see if you can stay on your feet while the tunnel spins around you. Spy on passers-by in the street below and pick them up in your hand in the Camera Obscura.

Princes Street

Prince's Street is Edinburgh's most popular shopping thoroughfare. Home to huge flagship stores such as Debenhams, Frasers, Zara, Primark, M&S and the historic Jenners, this is the street to keep up with High Street fashion. Princes Street Gardens is the venue for seasonal markets including the Traditional German Christmas Market while the Edinburgh Farmers' Market selling fresh, home grown produce is held every Saturday from 9am - 2pm in nearby Castle Terrace.
