Bentota at a Glance

Bentota is a town in Sri Lanka, located on the southern tip of the Galle District of the Southern Province, about 7–8 kilometres south of Beruwala on the A2 highway. It is the prime beach resort of the south-western and southern coastal belts of Sri Lanka. Bentota is a very pretty rural area with the greenery of the landscape that is especially striking. Most of the areas are well shaded and sheltered by tall trees with the coconut palm trees dominating the landscape. Bentota beach is a picturesque beach and liked by all kinds of travellers for its palm fringed beaches surrounded by Bentota river and Bentota lagoon. The beach is ideal for snorkelling, diving, sailing, wind surfing, water-skiing, and deep-sea fishing on a traditional outrigger canoe.

It takes around 1.5 hours to reach Bentota from Colombo by train. The railway station is relatively small which is around 2 km away.

A wide range of water-sports activities such as wind-surfing, water-skiing, canoeing, banana-boating and deep-sea fishing can be enjoyed here.

Turtle Hatchery

This hatchery has some variations of turtles to watch. It has a section where the eggs are buried and hatched. Visitors are provided information on why the hatchery exists and the process. The turtle hatchery buy the eggs of turtles, hatch them and after a few days of their birth, they are again left in the sea.

Galapatha Raja Maha Vihara

It is an ancient Buddhist temple at Bentota which is a ‘must visit' place. The main temple building houses a number of brightly coloured statues and images. The sleeping Buddha is a long 25 ft statue that is placed on the floor in sleeping posture. This temple is believed to have been made in the 12th century.
