Dancing is very important in Zimbabwean culture. Around one in five Zimbabweans (the Ndebele and Kalanga groups) speak Northern Ndebele, commonly known as Sindebele. Both Shona and Sindebele are Bantu languages originating from the time when Bantu-speaking tribes populated the region over 1000 years ago.
This is the most common dish found in Zimbabwe and is stiff maize meal that is like a thickened porridge. It can be rolled into a ball and dipped into meat, sauce, gravy, sour milk, or stewed vegetables.
This is porridge that is flavoured with peanut butter, milk, butter or jam and is traditionally eaten for breakfast.
Portuguese traders brought peanut crops into Zimbabwe during the 16th century, as a result, it has become an important ingredient in many dishes. Dovi is a traditional peanut butter stew with meat or vegetables.
Papaya is one of the main crops in Zimbabwe and so the locals make it into candy. Papaya is cooked in and dusted with sugar to make a sweet treat.
April is a busy month for Harare, at least festival-wise. April 15 to 16 marks the annual Jazz Festival. Famous African musicians take to the stage and there are workshops for budding talent. All of the proceeds go to charity and many students are given free entry.
Presented by the Zimbabwe Academy of Music, the Bulawayo Music Festival is held every two years from May 23-27. Playing host to a wide range of genres including classical, pop, jazz, and gospel, the festival is one of best musical showcases in the country. There are a variety of concerts by both international and Zimbabwean acts, but also informative workshops for festival-goers to attend.
