Dambulla at a Glance

Dambulla is situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, about 148 km north-east of Colombo and 72 km north of Kandy. Dambulla caves are supposed to be established before 1st century BC as one of the largest monasteries in Sri Lanka and it became a major location to view evolution of the ancient Sri Lankan arts. Dambulla has over 80 caves in the surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation locations. The temples contain many statues and paintings. Hindu statues are believed to be of the 12 century AD and the latest paintings are of the late 18-century.

Flights are available up to Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayaka, from where tourists can travel to Dambulla by bus or a hired car. Dambulla has an impressive network of roads that is well-connected to all the major Sri Lankan cities. It is located about 72 km away from Kandy.

Golden Temple and Cave

This cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The excavated shrine-caves, their painted surfaces and statuary are unique and have been in continuous use for over 22 centuries. It is Sri Lanka’s most popular historic site. The shrines also house a collection of 157 statues of Buddha in various sizes and poses, including a 15 metre long reclining Buddha. The paintings on the walls of the caves are unique and include Buddha's first sermon. Most interesting is the largest cave, as ceiling of this cavern is fully illustrated with paintings.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress and City

The towering rock outcrop of Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular natural landmarks. The ancient rock fortress and palace of Sigiriya, currently standing in ruin, is a magnificent site which is surrounded by beautiful gardens, reservoirs and other structures. Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982, Sigiriya is Asia’s best preserved city of the first millennium, showing complex urban planning around the base of the rock, combined with sophisticated engineering and irrigation skills.
