It is a port city on the east coast of Sri Lanka and is renowned for housing the largest Dutch fort in the country. The beautiful, quiet sandy beaches are ideal for tourists to relax thousands of miles away from bustling city life. The Koneswaram Temple is an old Hindu temple in Trincomalee which is built atop Swami Rock, a rocky promontory cape overlooking Trincomalee. It is one of the best tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. The monument contains its main shrine as Shiva and is regarded as the greatest building of its age for its architecture. The complex has laid in ruins, been restored, renovated and enlarged by various royals and devotees throughout its history.

Kanniya Hot water spring

The springs are square wells holding hot water at different temperatures. Wells are only 3–4 feet deep and you can clearly see the bottom. The temperature is considerably high but varies from one spring to another. Each well is surrounded by a 6 ft brick wall probably of Dutch origin. Similar to many other places of historical interest, the Kanniya Hot Springs also have their legends that go back to Ravana’s time.

Whale watching

z_pii-Chaaya.jpg

Blue whales in particular and smaller numbers of sperm whales can regularly be seen around six to eight nautical miles east of Trincomalee. Most sightings occur between March, April and August, September, as whales continue their migrations around the island from the south coast.
With resident and migratory colonies being spotted off the island’s south west coast, Sri Lanka is fast becoming a top spot to watch Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Dolphins.
