Ghent is easy to reach by train from all Belgian and European cities and is only half an hour from Brussels South Station. With two railway stations in the city and the international âBrussels Airportâ at Zaventem less than an hourâs drive away, arrival by train is an easy option.
The Cathedral of Saint Bavo is a religious building in Haarlem, built by the Catholics to replace the former waterstaatskerk in the Jansstraat called the St. Joseph. For over a thousand years this has been a place of prayer and Christian worship. Some of our visitors come to pray and to participate in Holy Mass. Others come to admire this magnificent building and its art treasures.
The Gravensteen is a castle in Ghent originating from the Middle Ages. Originally, this area was property to the count and therefore did not belong to the city. You can get the best âtasteâ of the Middle Ages in the splendid Patershol - the old street plan is authentic, two monasteries have been beautifully preserved and the numerous charming little restaurants offer unrivalled culinary variety.
The Belfry is the proudest symbol of the cityâs independence. In a euphoric Brabant Gothic style, this monument glorifies the industry to which the city owes so much. At the corner of the Cloth Hall is an old jailerâs lodge. The Belfry is the middle of the famous three-tower row, together with the Saint Bavoâs Cathedral and the Saint Nicholasâ Church.
Ghent is a rising star on the fashion front. You can find stores that specialise in exclusive designer fashions and accessories around Vrijdagmarkt. Prominent Belgian brands, as well as up-coming talent from Belgium and abroad are given a platform here.
The many galleries and antiques stores in Ghent sell modern and contemporary art as well as retro design, Western and ethnic art. The art and antiques market in Sint-Jacobs comes highly recommended.
No visit to Ghent is complete unless you have tried and tested its specialities and bought some to share with the home front. Chocolates, beers, genevers, meats, cheeses, Tierenteyn mustard, mastellen and several other deliciously old-fashion sweets are hugely found here.
