Ghent at a Glance

Ghent is a city with a population of a quarter of a million. Its size and position allow the inhabitants to enjoy a city with an interesting crossover between open cosmopolitanism and the quiet atmosphere of a provincial town. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe. Picturesque and peaceful Ghent is one of Belgium's major tourist draws after Brussels. Splendid baroque architecture dominates the city and narrow alleys between medieval buildings give the visitor a fantastic sense of history as well as spectacular photo opportunities.

Ghent is easy to reach by train from all Belgian and European cities and is only half an hour from Brussels South Station. With two railway stations in the city and the international ‘Brussels Airport’ at Zaventem less than an hour’s drive away, arrival by train is an easy option.

Cathedral of St Bavo

ghent-0014.jpg

The Cathedral of Saint Bavo is a religious building in Haarlem, built by the Catholics to replace the former waterstaatskerk in the Jansstraat called the St. Joseph. For over a thousand years this has been a place of prayer and Christian worship. Some of our visitors come to pray and to participate in Holy Mass. Others come to admire this magnificent building and its art treasures.

Gravensteen

The Gravensteen is a castle in Ghent originating from the Middle Ages. Originally, this area was property to the count and therefore did not belong to the city. You can get the best ‘taste’ of the Middle Ages in the splendid Patershol - the old street plan is authentic, two monasteries have been beautifully preserved and the numerous charming little restaurants offer unrivalled culinary variety.

Belfry

The Belfry is the proudest symbol of the city’s independence. In a euphoric Brabant Gothic style, this monument glorifies the industry to which the city owes so much. At the corner of the Cloth Hall is an old jailer’s lodge. The Belfry is the middle of the famous three-tower row, together with the Saint Bavo’s Cathedral and the Saint Nicholas’ Church.

Ghent specialities and souvenirs

No visit to Ghent is complete unless you have tried and tested its specialities and bought some to share with the home front. Chocolates, beers, genevers, meats, cheeses, Tierenteyn mustard, mastellen and several other deliciously old-fashion sweets are hugely found here.
