Santorini at a Glance

If there was a place on Earth the Gods would have desired to reside, it would have been Santorini Islands. It is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of Greece's mainland. This Aegean island has been charming visitors for centuries with its pretty villages, romantic sunsets and tranquil pace of life. Santorini rises dramatically from the sea on a crescent-shaped basin, or caldera, formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. Its whitewashed villages tumble haphazardly down the cliffs, dotted with churches and windmills while, at its shoreline, colourful fishing boats bob and toss on the sparkling waves. The capital Fira, is a popular stopping-off point for island-hopping cruise ships, with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars to keep the holiday crowd happy. Santorini is the ideal destination to consummate your wedding vows. So if you are looking for a heavenly destination next time, you just need to be at Santorini Islands.

In a traditional boat, you can reach the islands of the Caldera which is just 10 minutes far. A walk of about 20 minutes will take you to the top of the volcano where you will see still smoking craters and breathe an intense smell of sulphur. The tour will continue by boat to the island of Nea Kameni to continue to Palea Kameni, for the Hot Springs. The boat will stop in the small bay of Agios Nikolaos. With a ladder you can dive in the water and swim for about 30 meters until you reach the famous thermal spas of Palaia Kameni, where the water temperature ranges from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius as it mixes continuously with the normal sea currents.

Thirassia

Thirassia, although exactly opposite the Santorini caldera, is a complete contrast from Santorini. Quiet and undeveloped, it is almost untouched by tourism. The island of Thirassia comes under the jurisdiction of the Community of Oia. Narrow pathways, colourfully painted blue, yellow, green bell towers and houses makes the place unique and beautiful. Most of the homes are cave house styled, built into the rock. Agrilia is the largest and oldest village, a picturesque village with cave houses and wine canvas.

Beaches

Most of Santorini’s beaches are composed of dark volcanic sand that gets too hot in the mid-day sun. The most upscale and touristy beach is the Kamari Beach. The path along the beach is a fun and relaxing place to stroll in the evening. The pebbly sand of the red beach is reddish in colour and the backdrop is stunning. Perissa and Perivolos Beaches are essentially one very long beach that caters to the backpacker crowd and party scene but still has a wide range of accommodations and restaurants.
