Amsterdam is one of the greatest small cities in the world. It is the capital city and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and has all the advantages of a big city. Most trains arrive and depart from Amsterdam Central Station, located on an island between the Amsterdam Old Centre and the IJ waterfront. Marken is a village in the Waterland and Zaan Region, North Holland. It is known for its characteristic wooden houses and traditional costumes. It used to be an island in the former Zuiderzee, but is now connected to the mainland by a causeway. This picturesque little village was originally situated on an island. Floods were regular and often disastrous. To protect their belongings and themselves from the water, the inhabitants created artificial dwelling hills on which they build their houses. Volendam is a town in North Holland, 20 kilometres north of Amsterdam. Sometimes called "the pearl of the Zuiderzee", this place is a highly popular tourist destination. Here, you will find many Dutch cliches including the traditional costumes and wooden shoes. What draws most travellers to Volendam is the typical village centre with its old houses, the bustling harbour area and fishermen's town atmosphere. Just walking around the old centre will quickly make you get the vibe.

The history of wooden shoes goes back centuries. Wooden Shoe Factory offer the visitors an interesting demonstration of how a piece of willow or poplar wood is magically turned into a form of a wooden shoe. The shoe is then drilled out, dried, sanded, barrel-polished and, finally, painted.
