Ankara at a Glance

Ankara is the capital city of Turkey and the second largest city in the country after Istanbul. Ankara was a small town of few thousand people, mostly living around Ankara Castle, in the beginning of the 20th century. Ankara is a very old city with various Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman archaeological sites. The historical centre of town is a rocky hill rising 150 m over the left bank of the Ankara Cayi, a tributary of the Sakarya River, the classical Sangarius. The city appears to live in two separate time zones and has gained this double identity due to the speed of which it was developed after being declared the capital of the Turkish Republic in 1923. The hub of many great civilizations with a history dating back to the Bronze Age, Ankara has still a great importance in the present day, not only because its strategically perfect location, but also because it is the cradle of bureaucracy and education.

Ankara Esenboga International Airport is located some 28 km northeast of the city. Apart from Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and British Airways offer direct flights to their respective European hubs.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is located on the south side of Ankara Castle in the Atpazari area in Ankara, Turkey. It consists of the old Ottoman Mahmut Pasa bazaar storage building, and the Kursunlu Han. Kursunlu Han, used as an administrative building, houses the work rooms, library, conference hall, laboratory and workshop. The old bazaar building houses the exhibits.

Anitkabir

It is the Mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk, founder and first president of the Turkish Republic.
Anitkabir stands in the middle of Ankara which is the symbol of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the Turkish Republic. Visitors approach this imposing building along a road bright with flowers through a park. The huge hall, lined in red marble, has simple mosaic decoration recalling the many ages and civilizations of Anatolia - Hittite, Hellenic, Roman, Seljuk, Ottoman.

Kocatepe Masjid

The Kocatepe Mosque is the largest mosque in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. The majesty of the masjid is such that it is visible from almost all the parts of the city. The mosque has been built in the neo-classical Ottoman style architecture and is mesmerizing. The interiors have been designed intricately and the floor is completely carpeted with plush Turkish carpets. Carved from marble the four minarets and the cascading domes present a beautiful scene. The main dome is gold plated and the others are copper covered.

Ankara Castle

Ankara Castle is a popular tourist destination. The castle, originally from the Celtic period, rises in the Ulus district. The castle was renovated several times by the Romans as well as the Byzantines. Typical old Turkish houses, numerous art galleries and restaurants surround the castle walls.

Tunali Hilmi Avenue makes a great destination for a spot of contemporary shopping in Ankara. There you will find the modern mall Karum, an impressive, airy building with a whopping six floors of stores. You will find clothing, jewellery, textiles, cosmetics, gifts and more in Karum mall, as well as restaurants and a good dining area on the ground floor. Anka Mall, Cepa Mall are also good options for shopping.

In the heart of the city lies lively Kizilay, a great place to go for shopping in Ankara. You will find plenty of indoor malls here as well as boutiques and cafes lining the streets. Tunali Street and Kavaklidere are some pleasant streets to explore and browse. There are upmarket boutiques, modern stores, patisseries and gift shops.

Cikrikcilar Yokusu is a must-visit place in Ankara to purchase authentic Turkish items to take home, as well as being an interesting place to explore. In the area you will find hand-woven textiles, leather goods, jewellery and spices, and traditional fabrics for sale.
