Izmir at a Glance

Izmir is the base for Ephesus and is a resort town. It has some excellent beaches and water activities available. Of Turkey's hundreds of ancient cities and classical ruins, Ephesus is the grandest and best-preserved ancient Greco Roman city. The Roman remains are the best preserved and you can still see the colonnades and facades that fronted the buildings lining the intact paved thoroughfares of this once thriving city. It is located at the beginning of a long and narrow gulf full of yachts and passenger ships. It has a warm climate, allowing residents to enjoy five months of summer and has a very modern way of living. It is probably the most laid-back commercial city in Turkey.
