Konya at a Glance

Konya is a city in Central Anatolia in Turkey. It is not only famous for its rich industry and fertile agriculture but also has fame with its culture, tradition, economy and amazing unique masterpieces. Taking a place in the list of UNESCO World Heritage, Konya leaves the visitors breathless while paying a visit to Konya. Archaeology shows that the Konya region is one of the most ancient settlements of Anatolia. The results of excavations in Catalhoyuk, Karahoyuk, Cukurkent and Kucukoy show the region was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic Period. The city lies on a totally flat ground, with the sole exception of a small hill called Alaattin Tepesi in the very centre of the cityâwhich is actually a man-made hill, erected during the Seljuk period so that noble residents could easily watch the city below from their palace.

Air

Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines offer flights from Istanbul to Konya Airport, located about 18 km out of city. In the summer period it's also possible to fly from various European countries, such as Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark.

Mevlana Museum

The Mevlana Museum, located in Konya, is the mausoleum of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, a Persian Sufi mystic also known as Mevlana or Rumi. The Mevlana Muzesi is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims because Rumi is a saint. His poetic message of peace, love of God and one's fellow creatures, resounds to a far wider audience today than it did over 700 years ago when Rumi preached and taught in Konya. Rumi's personal products including his conical caps and his prayer carpet, clothing of his son and succesor, Sultan Veled etc. are kept in this museum.

Alaeddin Mosque

The Alaeddin Mosque is the largest and oldest mosque in Konya, constructed by the Seljuk Sultan of Rum in 1221. It lies on Alaettin Hill, the site of Konya's original acropolis. has some interesting architectural features, such as columns of different sizes and decorations incorporated from different periods. The interior includes a tomb chamber with the sarcophagi of a dozen Seljuk sultans.

Kilistra Ancient City

It is an ancient city that catches the eye for its impressive atmosphere in the Village of Kilistra Gokyurt. Established as a stone hallow, the city is one of the most special venues that is worth seeing for its magnificence and atmosphere in Konya. Overview

Konya's traditional bazaar quarter isn't as evocative as it once was, but the area just south of Mevlana Caddesi and west of Aziziye Caddesi is still home to a few shops selling carpets, antiques, and handicrafts, as well as merchants offering an array of ordinary goods of interest mainly to locals.
