Inverness (Scotland) at a Glance

Inverness is one of Scotland's seven cities and sits in the south of the Highlands, on the banks of the River Ness. It is the administrative centre for the Highland council area, and is regarded as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. Crowned by a pink crenellated castle and lavishly decorated with flowers, Inverness is a thriving city with a rich variety of places to visit and things to do both in the city and around. The city boasts a number of historic buildings in the Old Town that can be appreciated while browsing city shops. There is a great selection of places to eat and drink too with peaceful areas close to the city centre for relaxing and a great variety of places to stay. The city itself is small, compact and easy to get around. Inverness also offers a fantastic choice of events and festivals from traditional to modern including music festivals, golf championships and iconic Highland games on top of art, history and heritage events.

Inverness Airport is situated at Dalcross, 9 miles east of the city, just off the main A96 trunk road. It connects to Edinburgh, London and a number of other places with regular flights.

Inverness railway station is located in the City Centre. There are direct services to Edinburgh, Glasgow and London from the south and Aberdeen from the east.

River Ness

The River Ness is a river about 20 km long, which flows from the northern end of Loch Ness in Scotland, through Loch Dochfour to Inverness. There are a number of footbridges along its length of the River Ness where you can cross from one side of the river to the other.

Inverness Cathedral

The Cathedral is built of Red Tarradale Stone, with a Nave of five bays divided by columns of Peterhead granite. Inverness Cathedral has a number of statues, including a large angel carrying a font and a bust of Bishop Robert Eden. It also has an impressive collection of stained glass windows. Perhaps the best is the beautiful west window, in the gable immediately above the west door.

Dolphins at Chanonry Point can be seen at anytime but the best time to see them is usually on a rising tide.
