There is a frequent, fast train service to York on the main East Coast Line from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh. The trip takes a little over 2 hours. There is also a direct service between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport.

York Castle

York Castle is a fortified complex comprising a sequence of castles, prisons, law courts and other buildings on the south side of the River Foss. It is commonly referred to as Clifford's Tower. The stunning panoramic views over Old York from the top of Clifford's Tower, make it the ideal starting point for any visit to the city. There's plenty to discover at this imposing tower standing proud on its high mound. It is almost all that remains of York Castle built by William the Conqueror, and has served as a prison and a royal mint in its time.

York Castle Museum was founded by Dr John Kirk, a doctor from Pickering, North Yorkshire, and houses his extraordinary collection of social history, reflecting everyday life in the county. It is located in York, on the site of York Castle. One of its renowned displays is the reconstructed street, which has been hugely influential in museums displays worldwide. The York Castle Museum is housed in a former debtors’ prison and an adjoining former women’s prison, both of which are Grade I listed.
