Salalah at a Glance

Salalah is the capital city of southern Oman's Dhofar province. It's known for its banana plantations, Arabian Sea beaches and waters teeming with sea life. The Khareef, an annual monsoon, transforms the desert terrain into a lush, green landscape and creates seasonal waterfalls. The Frankincense Land Museum, part of the Al Balid Archaeological Site, recounts the city’s maritime history and role in the spice trade.

Best Time To Visit The best time to visit Salalah is during the monsoons (June to September). The city looks its best during this season when the dry arid land comes alive and there is a wide expanse of greenery on the mountains and the rocky terrain looks exquisite. Nabi Ayoub’s Tomb

Nabi Ayoub’s Tomb is one of the most popular sights of the city. The perch which is located on the Jebel Atteen range is also known as the ‘Prophet Job’. The tomb was used for prayers and is regarded by Muslims, Jews and Christians.

The Sohar Fort

The Sohar Fort has a museum which houses Al Musnad’s writings, ancient scriptures and coins. There are many other museums in this city which give you glimpses from its rich past and help you understand the city better.

Ain Sahnot, Ain Rzat and Ain Hamran

There are a number of parks and gardens surrounding beautiful, natural springs like Ain Sahnot, Ain Rzat and Ain Hamran. They are perfect for those family picnics and usually have no entry fee.

Mughsail Beach

You can relax and unwind at the many beaches in the city. Head to the Mughsail Beach to listen to the soothing sound of waves, catch glimpses of camels and watch rare migratory birds frolicking in the waters.

Being the traditional centre for shopping for more than 5 centuries, Salalah is well known for its daggers, brassware, carpets, trunks, bukhoor incense, hand woven textiles, baskets and myrrh and of course for frankincense, gold and silver.

Nizwa Souk,Mutrah Souk,Sinauk Souk

The Nizwa Souk is famous for pottery and silver while Mutrah Souk is known for bukhoor. At the Modern Replica Souk you can get knick-knacks, perfumes and watches. The Sinauk Souk is known for its jewelry, clothing, livestock and handicrafts.

Al Hafah Souk

The Ibra Ladies Souk is the perfect place to get those utensils and textiles that you’ve been wanting for so long and for traditional items like frankincense, gold, silver, rose and myrrh you can go to the Al Hafah Souk.

Dolphin Beach Restaurant

One of the few places in Salalah to offer dining with a sea view, this open-air restaurant under the coconut palms offers a different themed buffet each night. Call ahead to reserve a beachside table if you want to watch the waders dash in and out of the flood-lit waves, finding their supper as you eat yours.

This atmospheric venue serves Indian meals and an Arabic-Indian buffet dinner on Thursday. It also has private dining areas for Omani-style food. Needless to say it is always abuzz with locals and is a good place to gain a flavour of cultural exchange – such as has been occurring in Dhofar for centuries.

This no-frills restaurant, one in a string of cheap and cheerful eateries 1km east of the Crown Plaza Resort, serves juices, grilled chicken, burgers and pizzas. Stroll along the same road for dessert from the fruit stands.
