Naxos at a Glance

Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. Kastro, a hilltop castle dating to the 13th century, houses an archaeological museum.

Old Town

Naxos Old Town is small but endlessly fascinating. It is located on a small hill on a beautiful coastal location and comprises many beautiful streets, which all seem to be under 12 feet wide. All are beautifully maintained and are a photographer's paradise.

Portara

potara.jpg

The Portara stands on Palatia, which was once a hill but is now a separate little island connected to Naxos by a causeway.
It is the entrance to an unfinished temple that faces directly toward Delos, Apollo's birthplace. For this reason most scholars believe it was dedicated to Apollo, but some think it was built in honor of Dionysus, who was worshipped on Naxos Island.

Plaka Beach

plaka.jpg

Plaka is like a continuation of the beach of Agia Anna and is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. It is a calm and endless sandy beach with, in some parts, big flat stones and amazing crystal clear waters. In the beginning of the beach one can find sun beds and umbrellas but most of it keeps its unspoiled natural beauty, without any tourist facility to disfigure it. A few hotels, restaurants and cafes can be find behind the sandy dunes boarding the beautiful beach.

Eggares Olive Press Museum

eggares.jpg

The olive tree is a symbol of the Mediterranean, and not unjustified. It's connected with the mediterranean alimentation but anyone can say that it's related with the survival of natives. So, these agricultural-humble buildings, that in the language of the people are called liotrivia, were an inextricable piece of their lives. In Naxos there are 90 counted olive press buildings. Not many are saved from time, or their use has been altered (they have become residences). Most of which are located in the central and mountainous Naxos, as the olive oil production there is bigger. In the lowland the olive press is called as in the mountainous "fabrika". Our Olive Press is situated in Eggares Village on the main road, easy accessible.
