Perhentian Island at a Glance

The Perhentian Islands are a small group of beautiful, coral-fringed islands off the coast of north eastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu. The two main islands are Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil. Both islands are fringed by white sand beach and the crystalline waters are host to a wide variety of corals, sea-turtles, jellyfish, small sharks and reef-fish. Most Popular tourist activities include scuba diving, snorkelling, and swimming.

The only way to reach Perhentian islands is by sea. Boat services are available from Kuala Besut, Kota Bharu and Kuala Lumpur which takes around half an hour to reach. The easiest way to travel around the islands is by water taxi, which can be arranged very easily.

You can enjoy underwater diving with trainers and explore the untouched marine life on the sea bed. If you are lucky enough, you may find yourself swimming next to a turtle. The underwater world in Perhentian is a world of magical colours. The Pinnacle Tokong Laut is a popular dive site. Sharks, stingrays, moray eels, barracudas, parrotfish, lionfish, scorpion fish and even whale sharks can be seen once in a while.

Children as well as adults are sure to have great time swimming among the wonders of marine life. All resorts gives snorkelling gears for rent and arrange snorkelling tours around the islands. The best place to watch turtles is the middle of the beach in front of Perhentian Island Resort, where the sandy bottom is covered with algae. Swimming and snorkelling with dolphins and colourful fishes is a must do when you are at the Perhentian Islands.

The shops along the beaches sell everything from beachwear, toiletries, sun lotion, cigarettes, food, snacks, soft drinks, fresh milk to medicines. Perhentian Island is not famous for shopping, but you can find goods needed for regular use very easily.
