Tooth Relic Temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is considered the foremost sacred place of worship in the Buddhist world. It is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of Lord Buddha himself. Monks of the two chapters of Malwatte and Asgiriya conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple. The relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.
Kandy Lake is situated in the heart of the hill city of Kandy. Kandy Lake, the main body of water in the city of Kandy in central Sri Lanka, is a man-made lake created in 1807 by the last Sinhalese king of Kandy. It is a protected lake, with fishing banned. The lake has a perimeter of 2.1 miles and a maximum depth of 60 feet. It is situated by the side of the Temple of the tooth. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated in the northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka wildlife department in a 25 acre coconut property near the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection for the orphaned elephants found in the jungle.
