Kandy at a Glance

Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka, located in the Central Province. It is the second largest city in the country after Colombo. Kandy is home to The Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. This sacred Buddhist site, popularly known as the city of Senkadagalapura, was the last capital of the Sinhala kings whose patronage enabled the Dinahala culture to flourish for more than 2,500 years. Kandy has a rich history. The name Kandy was derived by the colonial rulers from the word Kanda in Sinhala, meaning a hill. Kandy remains a peaceful city compared to most other parts of this island country, with a remarkably lower crime rate and refreshing climate.
