Nuwara Eliya at a Glance

Nuwara Eliya is situated at around 2000m above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations. Nuwara Eliya is the main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry. The city pretends to be particularly well-kept while neat and green grass gives to the locality an aspect of “colonial British style". It was developed by Britishers as an exact replica of the British town. Nuwara Eliya was built entirely during the 19th century and its architecture mimics that of an English country town, with red-brick walls, country house like hill club and mock-Tudor half-timbering. Nuwara Eliya produces some of the country's best tea. Major tourist attractions are Horton Plains, a National Park where sambhar and leopard are frequent sights and Hakgala Botanical Gardens famous for its collection of roses and the rare fernery. The town is an excellent getaway for trekkers and nature lovers.
