Nuwara Eliya is about 76 km from Kandy or 180 km from Colombo. The journey takes around 6 hours to reach. It can be reached only by road although the nearest railway station is Nanu Oya.
Hakgala Botanical Garden is one of the three Botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, the other two being Peradeniya Botanical Garden and Henarathgoda Botanical Garden. It is the second largest garden in Sri Lanka. Hakgala Botanical Garden is situated on the Nuwara Eliya badulla main road, 16 km from Nuwara Eliya. The garden has a cool temperate climate because the altitude is 5,400 feet above the sea level. It is about 7miles south east of Nuwara Eliya.
There are a number of stunning waterfalls within easy reach of the city, Devon Falls and St Clairs being the most notable. The former has a drop of some 318 feet, offering some excellent photo opportunities. Devon Falls is a waterfall in Sri Lanka, situated 6 km west of Talawakele, Nuwara Eliya District on A7 highway. The falls is named after a pioneer English coffee planter called Devon, whose plantation is situated near the falls. The waterfall is 97 metres high and ranked 19th highest in the island.
Horton Plains National Park is the only National Park situated in the hill country and the highest plateau in the island consisting of grassland interspersed with patches of forest, with some unusual high altitude vegetation and an excellent excursion. It is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and bird watchers. It falls within the Nuwara-Eliya District, 200Km away from Colombo. The panoramic beauty of the hill country is witnessed within the park. The Plains are a beautiful, silent, strange world with some excellent walks. The most stunning place is the World's End, where the southern Horton Plains suddenly ends, and drops off to nearly 1050 meters, which is an awesome sight indeed.
Nuwara Eliya features traditional local retailers selling locally produced goods rather than branded or imported products. Visitors hoping to take home some of the world's finest tea will not be disappointed by the variety on offer with plenty of small shops selling locally grown blends. For local handicrafts, silk goods, masks, carved figurines, sarongs and leather products, the city has a good selection of retail outlets.
