Galle at a Glance

Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the south western tip of the country. The seaside town of Galle is 116 Km from Colombo by road or rail, down the south-west coast. The walled city has stood since the early sixteenth century, through the Colonial periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and British and in the present times is proclaimed as an archaeological reserve and been identified as a living World Heritage Site. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architecture styles and native traditions. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers.

Galle is served by Sri Lanka railway’s coastal line and is connected by rail to Colombo and Matara. Travelling time is around 3 hours. Galle Railway Station is a major station on the line, and serves as the meeting point of the west-coast and south-coast segments of the line.

Road

The A2 highway, which is commonly known as the Galle Road runs through the city and connects Galle to Colombo by the west-coast portion and Hambanthota by the south-coast portion.

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications

This fortified city, built by the Dutch is the best-preserved sea fort in South Asia. It’s a living heritage site. This 90 hectare attraction is a superb blend of architecture, with fortifications that resemble those in the coastal areas of Portugal. The wide streets planted with grass, lined up houses each with its own garden and an open veranda are truly sign of European ruling.

Sinharaja Rainforest

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a National Park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It has been declared as a World Heritage Site in 1989. Excursions, river trips, rural village walks and many other adventure activities can be done here. This forest is very popular for Bird Watching, and this is Bird watcher’s paradise. Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie can be seen here.
