Negombo at a Glance

Negombo is located approximately 37 km north of commercial capital Colombo in Sri Lanka, at the mouth of the Negombo lagoon. The major beach resort in the West Coast is Negombo. The wide sandy beaches and the safe sea are the major attractions of this place and it is perfectly located within 7 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka. Negombo is the fifth largest city in the country after the capital Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna and Galle. It is one of the major commercial hubs in Sri Lanka with about 128,000 inhabitants approximately. Negombo has a small port, and its economy is mainly based on tourism and its centuries-old fishing industry. It is known for its huge and old fishing industry with busy fish markets and sandy beaches.

Three railway stations are served for Negombo city. Negombo downtown station is the main railway station of Colombo - Puttalam railway line.

Road

E 03 expressway links the capital Colombo with Negombo city and travel time is 20 minutes. The Bus Terminal Complex of Negombo is one of the best bus stands in Sri Lanka and it comprises unprecedented ultramodern architectural features.

Fish Markets

Negombo is at the northern end of a lagoon that is renowned for its lobsters, crabs and prawns.
There's lot of fish drying rows, fresh fish selling stands etc. being sold in the market. The place is a bit stinky but it is the best place to get a wide range of fresh fishes.

Canals

Canals were constructed by the Dutch people across Negombo which flows to the sea. You can hire a bicycle in Negombo from various hotels and ride the canal-side paths for some distance, enjoying the views and small villages along the way. Boats are also available. The trip typically takes something approaching 3 hours or so and you will see many birds, water monitors and other wildlife.

St. Mary's Church

It is the best known church and is one of the biggest attractions on the island. The church is about 140 years old and has got amazing religious depictions painted all across its ceiling. It's a must-visit in the evenings just to see light falling through stained glass. This holy building is lavish and grand in nature, standing tall amidst other structures in the town.

Shopping options in the town are somewhat limited, as the shops cater mostly to locals and tourist necessities. Gemstones, silver jewellery, leather goods and carved masks are sold in the shops along the beach. However, in the hotel road some shops are there selling traditional handicrafts and masks.
