Yala National park at a Glance

Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka. The entrance to the park is at Palatupana, 12km from Kirinda. This park is best known for its variety of wild animals and is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan leopards and aquatic birds. Over 130 bird species have been recorded and include delights such as crested-serpent eagle, white-bellied sea eagle, lesser flamingo, pelican, spoon bill, night heron etc. Yala is an ideal place to spot wild buffalo, mugger or mash crocodile, elephants, sloth bear and illusive Leopard.

The gateway to Yala National Park is Tissamaharama. A 20 km drive via Kirinda takes the visitors to the Palatupana. At Palatupana, the well-designed visitor centre provides jeeps with soft–tops which afford better opportunities in viewing wild life.

Safari

Majestic Sri Lankan elephants and leopards are the main attractions of this park. Jeeps are usually available to go for safaris. The park consists of five blocks, two of which are now open to the public. A wide range of bears, leopards, and birds as well as other animals are found here. Leopard density of this park is higher than anywhere else on this planet. You are also likely to see sloth bears, deer, wild boar, buffaloes, crocodiles and monkeys. The area under forest cover has a variety of ecosystems including moist monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, semi deciduous forests, thorn forests, grasslands, fresh water and marine wetlands.
