Kaikoura at a Glance

Kaikoura is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located on a rocky peninsula, protruding from lush farmland beneath the mountains. The Maori name Kaikoura, translates to 'meal of crayfish' and it is the crayfish for which the region has traditionally been famous. You can have an exciting close up encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale, the largest of the toothed whales. Kaikoura's resident Sperm Whales are the largest carnivore on the planet and can reach up to 20 metres in length. These whales can be seen all year round making Kaikoura one of the most popular whale watching locations in the world.
