Timaru at a Glance

The second largest city in Canterbury, Timaru sits about midway between Christchurch and Dunedin. It has everything you need for a pleasant stopover. Take a break in Timaru and enjoy Caroline Bay's safe swimming beach, landscaped piazza and walks. A collection of restaurants and cafes link the beach to the main shopping area. If you’re thirsty, consider a tour of the local brewery. Timaru is located on State Highway One, the main road route down the eastern coast of the South Island. There are regular coach and minibus services to Christchurch, Dunedin and other major cities.

Sacred Heart Basilica

This beautiful neoclassical church impresses with multiple domes, Ionian columns and richly coloured stained glass. There's an Art Nouveau feel to the plasterwork, inside the church which includes intertwined floral and sacred heart motifs.

Aigantighe Art Gallery

One of the South Island’s largest public galleries, this 1908 mansion houses an important collection of New Zealand, Pacific and European art from the past four centuries. Local luminaries featured include Frances Hodgkins, Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere. The gallery’s Gaelic name means ‘at home’ and is pronounced ‘egg-and-tie’. You can also explore the sculpture garden outside the gallery.

South Canterbury Museum

Historical and natural artefacts of the region are displayed here. Highlights include the Maori section and a replica of the aeroplane designed and flown by local pioneer aviator and inventor Richard Pearse. It's speculated that his mildly successful attempts at manned flight came before the Wright brothers' famous achievement in 1903.
