Darwin is served by Darwin International Airport which is close to the city's Central Business district in the Northern suburbs for regional, domestic and international flights. Lake Alexander is a man-made lake named in honour of Alec Fong Lim who was Lord Mayor of Darwin. The site of Lake Alexander was originally an area of low-lying coastal marsh Darwin. Lake Alexander has a maximum depth of 2.8 metres and a water quality similar to other naturally occurring swimming areas. It provides free swimming and playground facilities, with a safe beach, bike tracks, BBQ and picnic areas. Swimmers are safe from water sports like kayaks, sailboats etc. as the swimming and sports areas are different.
Litchfield National Park with its lush woodlands, spectacular waterfalls, sparkling plunge pools and tall termite mounds is an increasingly popular trip from Darwin. Just a few kilometres after the parkâs entrance youâll see the surreal, tombstone-like field of giant termite mounds. Million-strong armies of tiny termites have built these on a north-south axis to protect the interiors from intense sun. The intelligently designed buildings are marvels - many of which are more than 2m tall â from the nearby boardwalk.
The Darwin Military Museum (DMM) was founded in the mid 1960s by Lieutenant Colonel Jack Haydon and members of the Northern Territory branch of the Royal Australian Artillery Association. The Association, throughout it's numerous contacts, soon started accumulating war memorabilia from all over the Territory, other parts of Australia and internationally. Since then, several notable local collectors have also contributed greatly to the museumâs exhibits including the newest The Defence of Darwin Experience (DDE).
Holmes Jungle Nature Park protects large numbers of birds, mammals and reptiles that seek refuge in the cool monsoon rainforest. The hilltop area overlooks the wetlands and surrounding bushland and is an ideal spot for a picnic. On your walk down to the jungle make sure you keep an eye out for red-backed fairy-wrens, which are common in pandanus clumps in the park.In the Wet Season you might see spangled drongos and pied imperial-pigeons.
