Haunted Tour of Kolkata

Talking about Kolkata's most feared places is also reviving its glorious past. A city which was liked more by the Mughal, Dutch, English and French people. Almost every street in Kolkata has a story to tell. There is no dearth of ghostly stories in Kolkata such as Lady Metcalf's wandering soul searching someone from the corridors of the National Library of India. Apart from this, places like Putulbadi (House of Dolls), The South Park Cemetery and Writers' Building await you for even more scary experiences and old stories.

National Library of India
India's largest library is also a ghost haunt besides book lovers. This place normally attracts fans of ghost stories. It is believed that Lady Metcalf's soul has been wandering here in the corridors of the library for a long time, many people believe this story to be true while some have even seen it.

Putulbadi or House of Dolls
There is no doubt from its name that it is a haunted place. Some people live on the lower floor of this old dilapidated building and its upper terrace is filled with dolls. No one is allowed to visit the upper floor of the building even during the day, as it is believed to be inhabited by the spirits of prostitutes who were tortured by landlords before and after British rule in India.

South Park Street Cemetery
Whether or not the place is scary, but a visit to the cemetery is nothing short of a unique experience. Whenever it comes to one or two horror stories, there is definitely mention of Kolkata's South Park Cemetery. Opened in 1767, it is home to over 1600 graves, mostly covered with creepers and mosses.

Ravindra Sarobar Metro Station
Some eyewitnesses believe to have seen some white figures and ghosts inside the station late at night. There have been many incidents here when the drivers of the train put on some strange white clothes and stopped the train due to the shapes crossing the tracks. People tell the cause of these incidents to suicides, according to people, the souls of those who commit suicide wanders here.

Writers' Building
This old building is used as an office for administrative staff but no employees are believed to stop here after sunset. Some rooms in the building are empty and have not been opened for decades. There are many stories related to this place, it is said that the closed rooms here have become haunted and, in the evening, strange voices like laughter, shouts and whispers are heard.

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club
People passing by The Royal Calcutta Turf Club, also known as Race Course, have observed and reported a white horse galloping on the tracks in a moonlit Saturday night. People and maintenance staff relate foggy patches with "William Saheb ki Sada Ghora" (white horse of Mr. William)

Lower Circular Road Cemetery
Allegedly, Sir William Hay MacNaghten, a civil servant in the British Era, was brutally killed during the first Anglo-Afghan war. His wife found his body cut into tiny pieces. He was buried in the Lower Circular Road Cemetery. People have reported hearing noises in the cemetery and around it in the night time.

Kolkata Dockyard
Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh was removed by the British from his own home and set up their base here. Nawab died due to heartbreak. People have reported seeing the apparition of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh roaming plenty of times and believed the spirit seek revenge from the Britishers.

Under the Howrah Bridge - Among the Top Haunted Places in Kolkata
A spot under the Howrah Bridge near the Mullick Ghat flower market is believed to be centre for various paranormal activities. People believe that these are the spirits of those who lost their life in the Ganges.

Hastings House
Presently it's the Women's College of Calcutta University. This one is yet another haunted place in Kolkata. Therumour is that one could hear the footsteps of Warren Hastings, who come to the place in search of his papers which could have saved him from impeachment. Some students claim that they have seen a man riding a horse visit the place.
