The world-renowned landmark, Belur Math stands on the bank of Hooghly river. Spread over 40 acres of land, it is a pilgrimage place for people of different religions. Even atheist people come here in search of the inner peace and contentment. Belur Math is known as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission and Math which was founded by Swami Vivekananda.
The architectural design of Belur Math is very unique. Designed by Swami Vijnanananda, it is a symbol of secularism, an amalgamation of Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist and Christian style of architectures. Foundation stone was laid on 16 March 1935. The idea of this Math was developed by Swami Vivekananda and Swami Shivananda.
The maintemple houses a huge hall where people gather for prayers. The ambience is quite meditative. The serene campus of Belur Math boasts of several temples dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, in which their relics are enshrined. The Math complex comprises of several other temples, museums, a shrine and a monastery.The huge open spaces and gardens on the river bank make for a good space to spend time with family.
To reach this place, one need to take a ferry from Dakshineshwar temple. it's a 20-25-minute ride.Regular Bus services are there from Kolkata city centre.Photography is permitted outside the math but not inside.
The visiting hours of the Belur Math are as follows:
April to September: 6:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
October to March: 6:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM
The Belur Math is open on all days and has free entry.
